YELLOWSTONE season five looks like it’s going to delve into Jamie and Beth Dutton’s hate-filled relationship like never before given the events of the fourth series finale. But could it lead to the pair finally reconciling their differences?
The hatred between Beth (played by Kelly Reilly) and Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) has been palpable ever since Yellowstone kicked off on the Paramount Network. Fans discovered the rivalry between the two seemed to stem from Jamie lying to Beth about an off-the-books abortion when they were teens which has rendered her unable to have children and decades later, his sister’s resentment remains as rife as ever. Heading into a possible fifth season, however, John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) adoptive son and biological daughter may have to finally put their differences aside – especially if new quotes from Reilly are anything to go by.
The fourth season finale of Yellowstone has thrown Jamie straight back into the Duttons’ clutches after he spent much of the series trying to build bridges with biological dad Garrett Randall (Will Patton) and scorned ex Christina (Katherine Cunningham).
However, once Beth discovered Garrett had attempted to kill her, John and Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) in season three, she confronted Jamie with the information and left him with an ultimatum.
Beth would either hand Garrett and Jamie into the police, have Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) exact his own revenge on the pair, or Jamie could kill his own father.
After crying and begging on his knees for his sister not to expose the fact he knew about the murder attempts, Jamie decided to shoot Garrett.
The fandom is split on whether this was to save his own skin or whether it was a symbol of his loyalty to the Duttons, but one thing is for sure – there’s no turning back.
After killing his dad and lugging his body to the “train station”, Beth was on hand to photograph Jamie in the act, giving John the ammo he needs in season five to manipulate and blackmail him into doing what he wants.
And it was clear to see Beth felt some great pleasure in not only seeing her adoptive brother squirm and heading into season five, but she’ll also undoubtedly relish the chance to hang Garrett’s murder over his head.
However, in a recent interview, Reilly has opened up on her hopes for Beth going forward – and hinted it could involve finally making amends with Jamie.
Discussing Beth and Jamie’s emotionally charged and full-blooded scenes, Reilly told Entertainment Tonight: “A lot of those scenes are really difficult to play because they’re so filled with pain so they’re pretty brutal to drop into.
“It’s hard to talk about it honestly because when I’m playing her I’m full in, and when I have to come back out then I watch it and I don’t even remember doing some of the scenes.
“Yeah, I feel really bad for Jamie sometimes,”s eh continued. “I think the relationship with Jamie and Beth, it’s so toxic,
“It’s so full of betrayal, and it’s so full of pain for her, but I think the reason why all of that exists is because she loved him.”
When asked if she thought the siblings’ relationship could be healed, Reilly admitted she didn’t know.
But outlining her “hopes”, she confessed: “What I hope is that she finds some peace.
“And I don’t think you can find peace if you hold that much pain, if you haven’t dealt with those things.”
So with Reilly hoping Beth finally finds peace, it seems the only way to do so would to be to let go of the resentment she holds towards Jamie.
If Reilly’s hopes were to come true, Yellowstone season five may well see Jamie and Beth finally begin to rebuild their relationship.
But with so much anger and betrayal behind them, would they ever be able to set their differences aside – even for John?
Or will Reilly be left without Beth’s happy “peaceful” ending if Taylor Sheridan brings the drama back for a fifth run?
Fans will have to wait until the fifth series is renewed and released for definitive answers but it certainly sounds on the cards if Reilly has a say.
