“Lawmen: Bass Reeves” tells the story of Bass Reeves, the first black deputy U.S. marshal west of the Mississippi River. The limited series, created by Taylor Sheridan, stars David Oyelowo as the titular real-life lawman.

Director Christina Alexandra Voros took to Instagram to announce that “Bass Reeves” had wrapped production earlier this week.

“And that my loves, is a wrap. Such profound joy to have made such a magical thing with the most incredible humans I know. I am humbled to live and work and laugh with each of you,” Voros said. “My love for this cast and crew is bigger than a Texas thunderhead in springtime. I miss y’all already and can’t wait for you to see what we have made. #bassreeves”

Voros is a “Yellowstone” regular, directing eight episodes of the flagship western drama and several for the show’s first spinoff “1883.”

“Bass Reeves” began production in North Texas earlier this year. The show has filmed in Fort Worth, Glen Rose, Weatherford, Stephenville and Strawn.

Along with Oyelowo, the show stars Dennis Quaid, Donald Sutherland and Garrett Hedlund.

When can we expect ‘Bass Reeves’ to release?

While no premiere date has been announced for the show yet, it could arrive on Paramount+ as early as this fall or winter.

Sheridan and his “Yellowstone” universe collaborators work quickly. The spinoff “1883” was filming in the Fort Worth Stockyards in September 2021 and by that December, the first episode aired on Paramount+.

Using that three month example, it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility that “Bass Reeves” could air as early as September or October. Whenever the series does premiere, it will do so on Paramount+.

What about the main ‘Yellowstone’ show? When is it coming back?

The back half of “Yellowstone” season 5 will arrive this fall, however, it will be the last iteration of the current show.

“Yellowstone” season 5 premiered on the Paramount Network in November 2022, taking its mid-season break after airing its eighth episode on New Years Day. A short teaser released after the episode promised a summer return date for the last six episodes of the season.

However, word broke in February that the back half of the latest “Yellowstone” season could be the show’s last with Kevin Costner as John Dutton. Scheduling conflicts with Costner’s multi-part western movie epic “Horizon” precluding the star from continuing his role as patriarch of the Montana ranch family.

Paramount put the final nail in the coffin about a month ago, announcing that the back half of “Yellowstone” season 5 would be the show’s last in its current form. The final six episodes are expected to land on the small screen in November.

However, a “Yellowstone” sequel show is already in the works with a planned December release date. It’s unknown what actors from the flagship series will join the “Yellowstone” sequel, but expect to see a few friendly faces.
