Spoilers for General Hospital reveal that despite singing her farewell to Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard), Gladys Corbin (Bonnie Burroughs) was given permission to live. But Sonny sent her packing, sending her back to Bridgeport without even a luggage.
Many fans believed—and deservedly so—that Gladys didn’t receive the appropriate punishment for her actions. By putting Sasha Corbin (Sofia Mattsson) in risk through his diabolical ploy, she fixed her up with Dr. Montague (Darin Toonder).
No Turning Back
When Sasha confronted Gladys, it appeared as though she might be regretting what she had done. However, Gladys walked out of the room and contacted the police to drive Sasha back to Ferncliff after lying to Sasha’s face and agreeing to go to the police and confess.
Gladys knew that Dr. Montague intended to murder her as well. Gladys had no way of going back from there. There is absolutely no chance of redemption.
Why would Sonny, who has a reputation for “taking care” of people who betray him, let Gladys leave to live her life in Bridgeport and let her escape punishment for what she did to Sasha?
Fans are left feeling robbed of seeing Sasha get her justice. That being said, Bonnie Burroughs is a fantastic talent, and she perfectly played the character you love to hate.
Fans would certainly welcome her back. It looks like executive producer Frank Valentini left it open-ended for a reason. Maybe he will bring her back for some time in the future.
Burroughs conversed with Soap Opera Digest and reflected on her time at General Hospital. Bonnie said, “I’m attracted to characters who are messy. Gladys is a liar and has never been a fully mature, well-functioning adult. She couldn’t get her act together when it was terrible, and it was all about self-preservation at the expense of Sasha’s well-being.”
Burroughs Made Us Hate Gladys
The character of Gladys came to Port Charles in July 2019. She appeared on the show sporadically, making a few appearances here and there. She came back briefly in January 2020 and then again in March 2021.
Then, in 2022, she procured the storyline leading to the character’s exit. She started stealing Sasha’s money to gamble and pay off her gambling debts.
She also conspired with Dr. Montague to get Sasha back on drugs. All this so she could continue the guardianship that allowed her access and control over Sasha’s money.
The plot persisted until October 5, 2023, when Sonny eventually forced Gladys to leave town by calling her bluff.
For a few months in 1987, Burroughs portrayed Stacey Giordano on One Life to Live prior to her admission to General Hospital.
It’s interesting to note that although Burroughs was only meant to be on GH for a few days, he spent four years consistently appearing on the magazine.
Regarding Gladys’s retribution, Burroughs remarked, “She had something coming.” I thought “oh no, that’s terrible” when I saw the screenplay, which had her telling Sasha the truth and sincerely apologizing before handing her over to the police.
