Home And Away’s Tristan Gorey On Finding Out About His Logie Nomination: ‘Thought I Was Getting Fired’

What he thought was a ‘free trip to Sydney’ has resulted in Tristan Gorey winning over the the loyal Home and Away audience.

Tristan Gorey quickly won over the hearts of Home and Away fans when he arrived in Summer Bay last year playing the role of handsome doctor Levi Fowler, who not only saved fan favourite character Mackenzie Booth’s (Emily Weir) life, but also fell head over heels for her, with the becoming Summer Bay’s hottest new couple.

Tristan, 29, who hails from Western Australia, uprooted his life to take on the role and his hard work is paying off, as he’s now nominated for the Logie Award for Most Popular New Talent, telling Yahoo Lifestyle when he heard the good news he assumed they had gotten “the wrong cast member”.

While his storylines playing Levi have so far been filled with the classic Summer Bay drama — already he’s had a torrid affair with Mac which resulted in his marriage breakdown, been stabbed, and recently was punched by his sister Eden — we have no doubt there’ll be plenty more chaos for Tristan to take on as Levi navigates saving lives in the Bay and looking good while doing it.

The actor opened up to Yahoo Lifestyle about finding out he got the role of Levi, saying when he first read the brief he “burst out laughing”.

Tristan Gorey spills on how he got the role of Dr Levi Fowler:

“This brief came through on this dashing heart surgeon and I burst out laughing when I was reading [it],” he said. “I was with a good friend of mine who is a doctor, and she came up with all these ideas for me. I did the audition and a couple of days later I found out I had a chemistry test which is essentially for the higher-ups to see how you go with Emily Weir, who was playing the love interest.

“I flew over to Sydney for that and I thought ‘I’m not going to get this, it’s way above me’ so I thought, oh that’s a free trip to Sydney, that’s fun, and a couple of days after that I found out I had booked the role!”

On finding out he was the only Home and Away cast member nominated for a Logie:

Tristan, who first appeared on our screens in November last year, is now up for a Logie Award for Most Popular New Talent, telling Yahoo Lifestyle that he thought he was getting fired when he was called into a meeting to hear the good news.

“I didn’t know what to think when I got nominated,” he said. “Our publicist had a mysterious meeting he wanted to have, and our head of drama was in there too and I thought, ‘Oh God I’m getting fired or something’ and they sat me down and said I’d been nominated and I didn’t know what to think. I thought, ‘Oh, you guys must have the wrong cast member!'”

Tristan is facing stiff competition as he competes for the award with stars from Boy Swallows Universe, Bay of Fires, and The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, though notably, his contenders are all much younger than him.

When asked if he’d feel guilty winning against children, he was quick to quip “I think there’d be a lot of shame if I don’t beat out the school children!”

On who Levi would date if he wasn’t with Mac

If there’s one thing Home and Away fans know, it’s that Levi and Mac share an undeniable chemistry, but if Mac hadn’t caught his eye, who would Levi go for?

“Good question. Gosh. I think he’d have to chase after Em Symons who plays Marilyn,” Tristan quipped, saying Levi liked his hospitality venues. “I think he’s got a secret love for Marilyn at the Pier diner. If it’s not Salt, it’s the Pier.”
