Tom Cruise has revealed that his latest Mission: Impossible— The Final Reckoning will take audiences to one of the most extreme and remote locations ever featured in the franchise— Svalbard, an icy archipelago in the Arctic Ocean. In a recent X (Twitter), Cruise shared a stunning behind-the-scenes video from the frigid location, a breathtaking environment in which the next Mission: Impossible movie’s action sequences were shot.

It’s a privilege to bring a location like Svalbard to audiences. It’s breathtaking in every sense of the world, and we can’t wait for you to experience it in theatres.

Svalbard, located halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole, is renowned for its untouched beauty, extreme cold, and abundance of wildlife, including polar bears. Filming in such a location was no easy feat. Cruise shared in the video that the crew faced some of the harshest conditions imaginable. The crew, including director Christopher McQuarrie, described the intense cold that hit the team during filming,

Despite this setback, Cruise and his team found ways to adapt, ensuring that Svalbard’s raw beauty played a key role in the movie’s visual narrative.

Svalbard’s inclusion in the movie wasn’t without complications. The Norwegian archipelago is a protected region, and the production team faced significant hurdles to obtain filming permits. In 2023, as reported by The Guardian, the team requested permission for dozens of helicopter landings to transport equipment and personnel.

However, local authorities denied the request to protect the area’s wildlife, particularly polar bears, and preserve the region’s pristine environment. Despite these setbacks, Cruise and his team adapted, ensuring that Svalbard’s natural beauty is well represented in the movie.

Filming in Svalbard continues Mission: Impossible’s tradition of using real-world, high-risk stunts. From the dizzying heights of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai to motorcycle stunts in the French countryside, the franchise has become known for its breathtaking, often dangerous locations. With The Final Reckoning set to be released in May, fans can expect a visually stunning and heart-pounding cinematic experience.

As the countdown to the release begins, Cruise’s behind-the-scenes sneak peek only heightens anticipation for what will undoubtedly be one of the most unforgettable action movies of 2025.

Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning is set to release on May 23, 2025 in the USA.
