Since the Yellowstone season 5 midseason finale aired in January, fans have been waiting to hear about the show’s future. While details continue to be few and far between, Kevin Costner appears to be thinking about the past.
On April 5, the actor went down memory lane and shared a black-and-white photo of himself on Instagram. In the picture, taken in August 1985, a 30-year-old Kevin poses in a white collared shirt, leaning on his hand and smiling straight at the camera. Though there are no clues about how the now-68-year-old actor came across the snap, he shared it amid continued uncertainty about his lauded role on Yellowstone.
In his first post back on Instagram since the event, Kevin admitted to being in a reflective mood. “I think often about what I’d go back and say to this guy. Mostly, I’d want to tell him to get ready for one hell of a ride,” he captioned the photo. “What would you tell your younger self if given the chance?”
Though many of his followers shared heartfelt messages in response to his question, others took it as an opportunity to plead for him to not leave Yellowstone.

“Film the rest of season 5 #yellowstone,” one person commented. “Please stay on Yellowstone. You are [the] best!! 🙌🙌,” a different fan said.
As folks may know, Deadline reported in February that co-creator and showrunner Taylor Sheridan and Paramount made the call to end Yellowstone with season 5. It was previously said that the series would go for at least two more seasons.
According to Deadline, disagreements over Kevin’s shooting schedule were key in making the decision. Kevin’s lawyer immediately shut down claims from Deadline sources that the star only wanted to work one week shooting the back half of season 5. He told Puck News that the actor is still “incredibly passionate about the show.”
Separately, in response to the Deadline article, Paramount said, in part, via a statement, “Kevin Costner is a big part of Yellowstone and we hope that’s the case for a long time to come.”
What’s more, in the midst of this, rumors have been swirling that Taylor has been eyeing a Yellowstone spin-off starring Matthew McConaughey. Though nothing was initially confirmed, Paramount Media Networks head Chris McCarthy has revealed that it is, in fact, happening. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the executive shared that Matthew’s new Yellowstone show “will move forward regardless of whether [Kevin] returns to the original.”
So, will fans get to see the last six episodes of season 5? It’s tough to say at this point, especially given that filming hasn’t started for the scheduled summer release. But we’ll keep crossing our fingers that Governor John Dutton returns to the Yellowstone ranch … even if it is for one last hurrah.
