Brooke Shields says she knew the perfect gift to give Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes for their 2006 wedding. The Mother of the Bride star, 58, shared in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that she couldn’t turn down the former couple’s invitation to their lavish Italian wedding.

“Of course I would have,” Shields told EW . “I was like, ‘Okay. I’ll [come] — as long as I’m not a dork!'” She shared that her joke prompted the Dawson’s Creek actress, 45, to ask for help in keeping with the popular wedding tradition.

“[Holmes] said, ‘Oh, you will?’ And I said, ‘What? Make yourself a dork?'” Shields recalled. “And she said, ‘No, will you get something old?’”

The Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields star said she had no choice but to help the bride. “I had to, like, hunt down antiques to find the perfect gift, you know, to give her,” she said.

“Do we get to know what it was?” Shields’ Mother of the Bride co-star Benjamin Bratt later asked.

“It was a little neat ring that you put on. It was Victorian jewelry, and it was really beautiful,” the actress described the gift. “And so [they] were supposed to be able to see their reflection in it and wear it around their finger.”

She added that the gift was “really beautiful.” Although the couple apparently followed the superstitious rituals during their wedding, they eventually called it quits in June 2012. Shields also had a rocky friendship with the Top Gun star, 61, after he criticized her use of antidepressants on the Today show in 2006. The pair eventually patched things up, with the actress noting that he had come to her house and offered a “sincere apology.”

In 2023, she also revealed in an interview with PEOPLE magazine that she once received a coconut Christmas cake from Cruise — who is known for sending the sweet treat to his famous friends during the holidays — although she was eventually removed from his list.

“I was on the list for a while. I had a good 10-year run, and I got coconut cake every year, which I was really happy [about],” she said. “… And then the cake stopped.” She added that she hoped to eventually get back on the list.
