Streaming giants like Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc. have been gaining a lot of popularity lately. They play a huge role in showing newly released movies and TV shows.
However, recently many filmmakers have been going against all these streaming giants as they believe that these are putting theatres ‘out of commission’. One of these people includes none other than Tom Cruise’s mortal rival and genius director, Christopher Nolan.
Christopher Nolan Hates Streaming Giants
Streaming giants play a major role in promoting and showcasing movies and TV series. They provide efficient and effortless options for users to stream their favorite movies and series. Many directors and major actors, however, are going against these streaming giants for various odd reasons of their own. And now, Christopher Nolan is one of those top-rated stars who have joined the motion.
The 52-year-old filmmaker who is widely known for directing movies like The Dark Knight has eliminated every possibility whatsoever of him embracing the Netflix model in his entire career. The producer holds streaming giants like Netflix responsible for ‘putting theatres out of commission’ with their mindless policies.
Criticizing the Netflix film model, the brilliant director said in an interview with Indiewire,
“They have this mindless policy of everything having to be simultaneously streamed and released. So they’re not even getting in the [theatrical] game, and I think they’re missing a huge opportunity.”
What’s more, is that he didn’t just stop there. Further on comparing the Netflix film model to that of Amazon Studios, Nolan pointed out,
“You can see that Amazon is very clearly happy to not make that same mistake, the theaters have a 90-day window. It’s a perfectly usable model. It’s terrific.”
While firmly believing that these streaming giants are making it even harder for unconventional and speculative movies to get the recognition they deserve, Christopher Nolan is rather improbable to turn towards these streaming giants at all.
Christopher Nolan and Tom Cruise’s Mortal Rivalry
With his battle with streaming platforms still ongoing, Christopher Nolan is in the spotlight for one more controversy, which has seemingly given him the title to be ‘Tom Cruise’s mortal rival’.
Tom Cruise‘s recent movie Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is about to be released on the 12th of July, 2023. Nine days later comes Christopher Nolan’s most recent movie, Oppenheimer. While one of these movies has one of Hollywood’s best actors in the lead, the other one seems to be directed by Hollywood’s most influential director. The only problem that lies here is that Nolan has booked all IMAX theatres booked for Oppenheimer, which quite literally means only one thing- that Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One will have a mere nine days in all the cinema houses before being laid off from the theatres.
What’s worse is that Universal has booked out 21 days of IMAX theatres exclusively before and after the release of Oppenheimer, meaning that no movie will be released in the theatre for the said period. This also means that Tom Cruise’s movie won’t even be able to share the house with Nolan’s movie, thus giving Nolan the title of being ‘Tom Cruise’s mortal rival’. So what Cruise can do now to save his movie is to secure other non-IMAX PLF theatres.
While on one side Nolan is standing up for smaller producers and their films, on the other end he is being hypocritical by acting as Tom Cruise’s mortal rival and booking all the IMAX theatres. However, who will win this mortal war is yet to be determined. Despite the battle, the two share a common viewpoint on streaming platforms.
