Tane has taken the stand in his own defence and Marshall begins with a hard line of questioning, focusing on the breakdown of his marriage to Felicity. When a flustered Tane confirms that he was heartbroken because he dreams of becoming a father, Marshall says he has no further questions.
Both Tane and Felicity are furious that their marriage breakdown has now been dragged before the courts, but Marshall insists he was left with no other option.
Later, Felicity tells her ex that she agrees with the defence – if it means he walks free, that means more to her than keeping their secrets.
Next, Harper comes down with a bottle of liquor to check on Tane. He thanks her for what she did in court. It’s a charged moment between them and soon Tane pulls her into a passionate kiss.
The next morning, they wake up together on the floor of the gym to the news that Tane has been called in for sentencing. He goes before the judge and is relieved when she confirms he will receive a suspended sentence – he can serve his time in the community.
Everyone’s in the mood to celebrate, but before Tane can talk to Harper, Marshall rushes him away. For her part, Harper seems troubled – does Tane feel the same way she does about their night together?
Meanwhile, Mali’s trying to arrange the smoking ceremony to release Stevie’s spirit, but between him and his mum, they’re struggling to find an elder who’s available. Off the back of a call with home, Mali reckons he’s found a compromise. He can’t do a full smoking ceremony because he’s not an elder, but he thinks it could still help.
On the beach, Alf, Justin, Theo, and Kirby join Mali for the ceremony. Afterwards, Alf watches as the four of them paddle out into the water on their boards in honour of Stevie’s memory.
