“It’s Somewhat Of A Red Herring”: Criminal Minds: Evolution Star Teases What Happens Next After Its Big Rossi Cliffhanger

Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2, episode 7 ends with Dave Rossi and Jill Gideon’s reunion, and Joe Mantegna teasing what’s next for them. The BAU’s work on the Gold Star mystery finally caught a break after Rossi begrudgingly talked to Elias Voit about the case. Realizing that the whole phenomenon is linked to an unpublished paper that the BAU’s founding fathers created decades ago, Emily Prentiss recruits Jill — Jason Gideon’s ex-wife and therapist, to help despite Rossi “forbidding” her to do so. This results in a tense reunion at the end of Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2, episode 7, “Piranha.”

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Mantegna previews what’s next after Rossi finds Jill in Jason’s old BAU office. Aside from being a silent partner in creating the famed FBI profiling team, Jill was apparently also once romantically linked to Rossi. While Mantegna says that what comes after is somewhat what the public expects, there’s more to their past than meets the eye. Read his full quote below:

I think it mirrors what people might expect [between characters] put in that position. Obviously, there’s been a lot of water under the bridge between these two. And now we’ll find out: Is it calm water? Is it turbulent water? We don’t know. I think it’s somewhat of a red herring in a way. What does that mean, she broke Rossi’s heart? Is there something more to it than that? Even when I read it, I thought to myself, ‘Well, okay, let’s see what that means.’ And that’s what makes it interesting. I mean, it’d be too simple to just say, oh, it’s just that. We still have miles to go before we sleep between these two characters.

Will Rossi & Jill Rekindle Their Romance In Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2?
Rossi Has Been Notoriously Unlucky When It Comes To Love

A big part of Rossi’s story in the Paramount+ revival is his grief over the death of his wife, Krystall, who even appeared before him while he was in captivity by Voit.

From what’s revealed so far, it seems like the original BAU creators were in some sort of love triangle, perhaps with Gideon unaware of it. Whether that’s the extent of the complicated relationship between Rossi and Jill is difficult to say at this point. It’s likely that everything will be out in the open in the next episode of Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2, considering its latest cliffhanger. However, it may not be fully explored, considering the BAU’s current problem with Gold Star. Anything personal between Rossi and Jill may have to wait until after the case is solved.

If Criminal Minds: Evolution is building toward Rossi and Jill rekindling their romance, it would be interesting how it will be handled by the team. A big part of Rossi’s story in the Paramount+ revival is his grief over the death of his wife, Krystall, who even appeared before him while he was in captivity by Voit. It’s no secret that BAU’s most veteran member hasn’t been lucky in love, so seeing him try again will be a process. If they decide to stay together, it’s also curious how much Jill will be involved in Criminal Minds: Evolution moving forward.

Paramount+ has already confirmed Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3, which means that if this romance actually happens, it will have to be part of the show’s storytelling. Jill may pop in and out, just like many of Rossi’s old partners just to establish that they were still together. Otherwise, she could rejoin the BAU full-time.
