Years after his exit, Michael Weatherly reveals his plans to step back into the role of “Very Special Agent” Tony DiNozzo Jr. on NCIS.

Michael Weatherly reveals his plans about returning as Tony DiNozzo Jr. in NCIS. Two decades since it premiered, NCIS remains one of the most watched shows on TV despite the cast looking very different from what it was when it first aired. Despite all of the original actors having already moved on from the show, one particular fan-favorite is looking to return as a Naval agent, a decade after he left the police procedural.

Taking to his official X/Twitter account, Weatherly confirms his plans to reprise his role as “Very Special Agent” Tony DiNozzo Jr. in NCIS. Check out his tweet below:

The actor responded after a fan asked him whether he likes playing NCIS’ DiNozzo or Jason Bull from his headlining show, Bull, more, saying: “There will be more DiNozzo someday because he is the one character that felt unfinished.” Weatherly also referenced his short stint playing Logan Cale in Dark Angel.

When Weatherly’s DiNozzo May Return In NCIS

Weatherly’s NCIS season 13 exit is one of the most impactful departures on the series, considering how vital he was in the show’s success at that point. Mark Harmon’s chemistry with Weatherly, which translated into DiNozzo’s strong bond with Leroy Jethro Gibbs, became the cornerstone of NCIS. Aside from that, he was also a capable agent who was effective in his job. In any case, NCIS has always left the door open for DiNozzo’s return, which will make it easier to reincorporate him into the team.

It’s unclear if CBS has a plan to bring back Weatherly. That being said, NCIS season 21 has a good reason to feature DiNozzo. In light of original cast member, David McCallum’s death, the police procedural is staging a special Ducky tribute episode, which will be better if some of his long-time cohorts return to pay tribute to him. Perhaps it could even be the perfect opportunity for the remaining original cast members to reunite on screen.

CBS has yet to give any concrete indication that Weatherly is part of their future plans for NCIS. However, it’s great to know that he is more than willing to reprise his role as the team’s “Very Special Agent.” Hopefully, the network makes the best of his possible comeback by also recruiting Harmon to step back into Gibbs’ shoes again.
