It is clear that Sylvester Stallone’s iconic role as ‘Rocky Balboa’ will always live on in the hearts and minds of his millions of admirers, who often ask him about the character’s potential return. His well-celebrated Rocky series undoubtedly left an indelible impression on the hearts of many with its iconic scenes and inspiring tales that revolutionized how the struggler’s story is told.
So it is safe to say that the legendary star made a name for himself in boxing culture, thanks to the enormous popularity of his beloved Rocky series. One of the all-time highest-grossing franchises, the film shattered many prior records. This encouraged devoted fans to continue enjoying the series’ films even today.
Even though The Expendables actor is no longer associated with the franchise, it is difficult to deny his influence on it. However, he once stated in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that there was one sports film that failed because of the fans.
Sylvester Stallone’s This Rocky Film Failed to Impress Fans
In his role as Rocky Balboa, Sylvester Stallone contributed to some of the greatest films ever made. But he also starred in one of these sports film franchises that failed due to the fans. If you correctly identified that it was Rocky 5, then you truly are his committed fan. Let’s view his opinions on the subject.
The actor, now 76, once told Entertainment Weekly:
“It didn’t even belong in the series. The fans, that’s what I felt bad about. Everyone says, ‘I hate the fifth one!’ The character jogs off into the sunset with a little bit of nobility.”
Given that this interview was conducted in 2006, it is likely that he was unaware that he would revive the character for the later-released Creed movie starring Michael B. Jordan.
The actor played an important role in the first two Creed films, even though he did not appear in the last released installment (Creed III –2023). Since all three Creed movies have received positive reviews, it is safe to say that there is little chance of the Rocky 5 curse being repeated.
But this won’t change the fact that fans were bitterly disappointed by Rocky 5, which was released after much expectation. Given the euphoria of Rocky 4′s ending, the expectations were high, but Rocky 5′s execution fell short of giving viewers the knockout punch they were waiting for.
Recalling The Earnings Of Rocky 5
In the Rocky movie, a boxer from a middle-class family decides to fight Apollo Creed, the undefeated heavyweight champion. One game against an unbeatable opponent increases a player’s respect in the eyes of the audience. Rocky Balboa has appeared in a total of six movies. These films go by the names- Rocky, Rocky II, Rocky III, Rocky IV, Rocky V, and Rocky Balboa.
The Rocky franchise’s fifth film, Rocky V, is widely regarded as its worst entry, and for good reason. In contrast to some of the first Rocky sequels, Rocky V has very few redeeming qualities. However, thanks to Rocky Balboa and the Creed movies, the Rocky movie franchise has made a massive comeback.
Moreover, with a $119.9 million global box office underperformance, Rocky V was the lowest-grossing film in the series. Well, why not watch it once if you have not already?
