Will Tom Selleck Return To This Franchise After Blue Bloods Ends?

With the end of BLUE BLOODS comes the likely return — and end — of star Tom Selleck’s other franchise, the JESSE STONE movie series.

“Tom Selleck’s commitment to BLUE BLOODS hindered his return to the JESSE STONE series,” Screen Rant reported. “The last JESSE STONE movie was released in 2015, with Selleck expressing interest in another entry.”

Per Screen rant, fans can expect an update on the tenth and final JESSE STONE movie after BLUE BLOODS finishes near the end of the year.

The first JESSE STONE movie came out nearly 20 years ago in 2005. The last one came out in 2015.

“The star has had some hits on the big screen, but audiences know Selleck best for his TV work like MAGNUM P.I. or BLUE BLOODS,” Screen Rant said. “This CBS procedural debuted in 2010 and ran for an incredible 14 seasons. Given that the majority of BLUE BLOODS’ seasons run for 22 episodes, that hasn’t left the cast much time to work on other projects. For instance, Selleck hasn’t appeared in a movie since 2010’s KILLERS, and has played the role of Frank Reagan almost exclusively for a decade.”

Movieguide® recently reported Selleck’s sentiments about the series’ end:

“For the past 13 years it has been an honor and a privilege to work on a show that not only celebrates the men and women who protect and serve in New York City, but also displayed the importance of family,” Selleck said.

“Working alongside these incredible actors, writers, producers, directors and crew has been a dream come true and I’m grateful to have been a part of this extraordinary group for over 275 episodes,” he continued. “Thank you to CBS Studios and CBS Network for their steadfast support and we offer heartfelt gratitude to the fans who gathered with us for dinner every Friday night.”

With BLUE BLOODS’ 22 episodes a year, it left no time in the schedule for Selleck, a Movieguide® Teddy Bear Award Recipient®, to film any more JESSE STONE movies.

In 2017, the now 79-year-old told Parade he’d like to reprise the role.

He said, “If BLUE BLOODS doesn’t [get uncanceled], there is room for a JESSE STONE because I’ve written them, as you know. I love Jesse. And he’d be different. He’s older. It’s been a while since the last one.”

In 2022, Selleck confirmed to TV Insider that he is “working” on a story for the final movie. Because of his and his character’s age, the script differs from the one he started to write after the ninth movie ended.

“We have a deal with Hallmark Channel, but they’ve moved on to [other] shows. It’s saleable, and if it’s not on Hallmark, we could end up elsewhere,” he said at the time.

“JESSE STONE: LOST IN PARADISE was a solid outing,” Screen Rant said about the last movie, “but it didn’t feel like any kind of ending or finale for the police chief. Now that Selleck finally has some time in his schedule, Jesse deserves one last mystery to solve before he and his dog Steve call it quits.”
