The young love stories of the Dutton family have been at the heart of the entire year 1923.1923 is the most romantic year that has been explored in the Taylor Sheridan universe. Because while Yellowstone has several couples for us to truly get to know and spend time with, 1923 has the distinct advantage of being able to follow Alex and Spencer on their whirlwind romance odyssey. And in Episode 6, “One Ocean Closer to Destiny,” we got the opportunity to observe how their love has genuinely bloomed throughout the course of the series as they have spent more time together.

1923 is the most romantic year that has been explored in the Taylor Sheridan universe.

The two are committed to continuing their relationship in the same way that they have been throughout much of it. Spencer convinces Alex to travel with him on the tugboat that he has chartered in order for them to reach the Suez Canal; however, things go awry when their captain passes away in the middle of his nighttime shift, and the boat becomes unable to move forward.

There, they are compelled to think quickly, but they are unable to come up with a solution in time, and as a result, the tugboat sinks while they are being rolled over by an abandoned ghost ship. Alex and Spencer are in a state of despair when they find themselves alone on an overturned boat that has not yet sunk, and they clutch to each other as they fear that they are going to drown. Before we got to this point in the season, there were already some touching passages, but this precarious circumstance is just setting the stage for the moments that show the Yellowstone universe at its most romantic.

After Spencer and Alex have been rescued by a passing ship, it is made apparent to them that it will be considerably more difficult for Alex to enter the United States as a single woman without having a husband to sponsor her. At that very moment, Spencer makes a marriage proposal to the ship’s captain, who is portrayed by Joseph Mawle, who also appeared in The Rings of Power. However, the captain is correct in pointing out that it is against the law to marry someone solely for the purpose of entering the nation. However, Spencer acknowledges that he isn’t merely making the request in order to get around the law and that he has other reasons for doing so.

The captain, without missing a beat, presents a box of rings for the pair to choose from so that they can get married to one another. When Alex is unable to locate a ring that is the perfect size for her, he even gives her the ring that he used to wear when he was married. This wedding is taking place simultaneously at the same time as Spencer’s nephew Jack Dutton (played by Darren Mann) and Elizabeth (played by Michelle Randolph) are exchanging their own handfasting vows in preparation for the birth of their first child together — continuing the theme of parallel Dutton romances taking place throughout this season.

1923 as a whole has centered the young love stories of the Dutton family and even celebrated the love that Cara and Jacob (Harrison Ford) have for each other. However, it is Spencer and Alex taking their time together, learning about one another, and joking while holding each other after all of the struggles that they have faced that makes them the most romantic pairing on the show, and they serve as the best example of why the romances on 1923 work. They have sweeping gestures and moments that feel cinematic in a manner that television rarely delivers us, but at their very core, they are also something that is real and something that can be obtained.

Even if we don’t all want to be chased by lions and then left abandoned in the middle of the ocean with sharks circling us in order to discover our one true love, the tender moments shared by Spencer and Alex are so endearing to watch that they make viewers want to watch the show over and over again. Observing the two of them care for one another in the manner in which they do gives us optimism about the possibility of a genuine romantic connection.

Because these characters are the younger generation of Duttons, attempting to find their place in this new society and picking the person they want to share it with, 1923 has the unique possibility to be the most romantic of these shows so far. This surprising prequel drama has given us some of the most devoted couples in the entire franchise to this point, as evidenced by Spencer and Alex’s unexpected wedding and Jack and Elizabeth’s handfasting, both of which were breathtakingly lovely.
