‘Yellowstone’ Alert: ‘1883’ Is Airing On The Paramount Network

With Yellowstone’s long hiatus seeming indefinite, you might be craving a refresher on what’s all gone down with the Dutton family out west. Matthew McConaughey may be the talk of the town with a planned sequel in development, but everything was just heating up in Montana before we went on hiatus. As the now-confirmed final season of the Paramount Network’s sweeping western drama ramped up, the Dutton family was planning to potentially kill each other, Jamie had been turned evil once again, and John Dutton was preparing to (possibly!) never return.

If you’re more inclined to read a recap than sit through however many hours of TV again, fear not, we got you covered. Paramount’s plan is to bring Kevin Costner back to finish Season Five in November 2023, before (likely) transitioning to a sequel series with McConaughey the following month. If you’re looking for a way to fill the rest of your summer until then, there’s still plenty of Yellowstone content waiting for you. You just need to know where to find it. That’s where we come in.

Where Can I Get Caught Up on Yellowstone?

Oddly enough, you can watch only the first four episodes of Yellowstone on the Paramount Network website by logging in with your cable or streaming provider. The rest of the series is not available on Paramount+ due to confusing licensing decisions. So if you want to catch up, there’s only one place to do it: Peacock. The first half of Season Five—which consists of eight episodes—was added to the streamer just last month.

When Is Yellowstone Season Five, Part Two Airing?

It’s anyone’s guess—as long as anyone is named Kevin Costner—but the second half of Season Five will air in November 2023 according to the Paramount Network, granted that they can convince their lead actor to return in time to film. With an additional WGA writer’s strike in effect, I can imagine that Season Five, Part Two debuting in 2023 is a lofty goal.

How Can I Watch the 1883 and 1923 Spinoffs?

Now, here we go. If you’re thinking, “So why the hell did I sign up for Paramount+?” Well, this is why. All 11 episodes of the spinoff series 1883 (which is actually a prequel) have been available to stream on Paramount+, including a 41-minute behind-the-scenes documentary titled 1883: The Road West. The series stars Sam Elliott and Tim McGraw as Dutton’s ancestors. Luckily, for those not subscribed to Paramount+ when the series debuted last year? As of June 18, Paramount Network has been airing the series weekly every Sunday at 8 p.m. ET.

There’s also talk of an upcoming series called Bass Reeves planned for future release. It’s not set in the Yellowstone universe anymore, but it’ll star David Oyelowo and focus on a famous Black lawman from the 1880s.

The first season of 1923—a sequel to the prequel—is also available. Starring Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren, and Brandon Sklenar, the follow-up series explores the Duttons as they engage in another land war of their own in Montana following World War I. Creator Taylor Sheridan announced that 1923 would span two seasons of eight episodes each and that it may be followed by even more Yellowstone content set in the 1940s and 1960s as well. So, if you though you could cancel your Paramount+ subscription and just watch 1883 live on air, think again.

What About the 6666 Spinoff?

Yes, believe it or not, there’s a third spinoff for Yellowstone in development. Titled 6666, the series will focus on the rival Four Sixes Ranch in Texas, and feature fan-favorite cowboy Jimmy. As much as it sounds like the Duttons would be flying around in hovercrafts in the year 6666, the confusing numbering trend will sadly not send the Dutton ranch over 4,000 years into the future. Though there hasn’t been any release date announced, 6666 will presumably also air on Paramount+.
