1923 season 2 is happening
After a successful first season, 1923 was renewed for season 2 in the early part of 2023. It’s great to see this popular show continue. There’s so much left to this story, and fans loved these new characters so much. They want to see more, and thankfully, that’s happening!
Unfortunately, though, we come bearing bad news about 1923 season 2 as well.
1923 strike delay updates
We have some bad news for fans hoping to watch 1923 season 2 in the near future. Production on the new season has been delayed because of the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes. In case you haven’t been following the latest entertainment industry news, both the WGA and SAG are on strike, meaning writers and actors cannot work on projects under the AMPTP. This includes the shows in the Yellowstone universe.
A long list of shows and movies have either been put on hold or pushed back, and we can expect the 1923 season 2 release date to come later than it was initially expected because of the strike. At this time, no one can really say when exactly the writers and actors will conclude striking; it’s up to the studios to give them a good enough deal on their contracts.
Is 1923 season 2 filming?
The cast and crew of 1923 season 2 were supposed to begin filming in June 2023 in Montana, but that did not happen. Deadline reported that the strike had halted production of 1923 season 2, and filming was delayed indefinitely. We’re unsure how much of the season was written before the writers began striking, but even if the scripts were complete, the cast cannot film right now.
In another update, Montana local news site KXLF (via Movie Web) reports that 1923 will no longer use the Butte Civic Center in Butte, Montana as their soundstage for the second season because of the delays in production. Reportedly, the show might not film in Butte at all moving forward, at least according to the local news site. As Movie Web points out, this means the team behind 1923 will have to find a new place to film. This could, potentially, push back the timeline for filming even more.
“It’s disappointing in the fact that people were looking forward to 1923 coming back and having production in town, but we understand,” Butte Chief Executive J.P. Gallagher told KXLF.
Has the 1923 season 2 release date been announced?
The 1923 season 2 release date has not been announced, and it likely will not be announced for quite a while. We know that production has not started yet. It’s possible that the scripts are done and everything is ready to go, but the cast and crew don’t want to cross picket lines to start filming.
That said, the second season should be a pretty quick filming process. The first season started filming in Aug. 2022 and then premiered in Dec. 2022. That’s extremely fast!
Assuming that happens for 1923 season 2, there’s a good chance that we’ll see the new season sometime in the second half of 2024. Originally, we thought that they would wrap this year and could be ready for premiere by the end of 2023, but that isn’t in the cards anymore. Production is delayed indefinitely, and even if the strike ends tomorrow, it would be a challenge to get the cast, crew, and everyone into place to get rolling right away.
On top of that, Yellowstone season 5 part 2 still needs to be shot, and we doubt the two shows would film at the same time. Just like with 1923, the original series is also believed to be delayed because of the strikes.
Because of all the uncertainty, we’re updating our release prediction from spring to fall 2024 to reflect the situation. There’s always a chance 1923 season 2 could come sooner than that, but we’re trying to be very realistic here. Please take our prediction with a grain of salt as we are not associated with Paramount.

How many episodes are in 1923 season 2?
Like the first season of 1923, there will be eight episodes in the new season. It’s unclear if the episodes will be split into two batches like the first season, but it’s definitely possible, especially considering the fact that production is behind schedule. Splitting a season into multiple parts helps with filming and post-production. It’s more of the broadcast TV model, rather than the streaming model.
The first half of the 1923 season 1 ended on Jan. 5, 2023, and then, there was a one-month break. The fifth episode was released in Feb. 2023.
1923 season 1 ending explained
At the end of 1923 season 1, it’s clear this story isn’t over. Spencer is on a boat heading for London after killing Arthur in self-defense on the ship back to London. Spencer and Alex agree to meet in the future in Bozeman, Montana. That’s a long way from London!
That’s one of the biggest stories of the season. Elsewhere, we find Teonna recovering from injuries in the fight with the priests who saw Hank killed. She’s still on the run and has not returned to her people.
We also see that Donald has paid the tax for the Dutton family’s land. They have a short amount of time to repay him or he will take over the land. They’re in a tough position, and it’s unclear how they will work their way out of it.
That’s where we expect season 2 will begin! There’s a lot of drama on the way.
Will there be a 1923 season 3?
It sounds like, by most accounts, that 1923 season 2 will be the final season of the series. The plan was to tell the story over two seasons and 16 episodes. That means 1923 season 3 probably will not happen. Brandon Sklenar also spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the series and confirmed the second installment is the end:
“No, it’s bookend. It’s still limited, but I think of it as one piece. There is just a split in the middle, but it is all one piece. It will conclude.”
Taylor Sheridan continues to expand the Yellowstone universe, however, so you can expect more from this Western franchise for years to come.
